Which Treatments Can Sedation Be Used for?

If your case requires multiple treatments in a single day, we usually use dental sedation to provide you with total comfort and relaxation. Sedation is useful for fixing a damaged or broken tooth.

Some of the procedures we perform using sedation for maximum comfort include:

Sedation Dentistry Methods We Offer

Based on your anxiety level and the type and number of dental procedures needed, we will help you determine the best sedation method for you. We offer two types of sedation:

  • Oral sedation involves ingesting a sedative pill before your procedure. While this pill lets you stay conscious and aware of your surroundings, it keeps you relaxed and lessens your pain. We recommend you get the help of a friend or family member to drive you to and from our office.
  • Nitrous Oxide is a form of light sedation. It involves breathing in oxygen, along with nitrous oxide gas, also known as laughing gas. It not only keeps you conscious but also alert and able to communicate. You will feel comfortable throughout your treatment. Afterward, you will be able to drive and return to your routine as soon as your dental work is done.

Is Sedation Safe for Children?

little boy getting nitrous oxide sedationSedation dentistry is safe for most children, especially nitrous oxide, which is the least invasive sedation method and usually recommended for children. If your child is experiencing dental pain or discomfort that requires comprehensive dental work, we are happy to help. Our dentists and talented dental staff are trained to work with children and can administer light sedation to ensure kids do not develop dental anxiety or feel pain during their procedure.

If you or your child has heart disease, hypertension, diabetes, or respiratory diseases, you must let our team know. Informing us about your current health and history allows us to administer sedation safely.

How Sedation Works

During your first visit, we will take things slow and help you relax. Our team will discuss any fear you might have and respond to all your questions. Only if you feel comfortable, this visit might involve taking x-rays and having our dentist examine your mouth gently. Rest assured, we will never judge you for your fears. If you need to undergo sedation so we can diagnose your condition, we will schedule another appointment accordingly.

Our team will explain to you which type of sedation we plan to use for you. We will administer your sedation during your treatment day and make sure you are fully relaxed and comfortable before the treatment begins. Our practice uses monitoring equipment to track your vital signs during the process and ensure your safety.

Who Can Benefit from Dental Sedation?

Dental sedation is an ideal option for patients with the following conditions:

  • Trauma from past dental experiences
  • High levels of fear & anxiety
  • Aversion from the noise, smell, and taste associated with dental care
  • Issues associated with local anesthetics
  • Fear of needles and shots
  • Sensitive gag reflexes that make it hard for the dentist to work

What to Expect Post Treatment

After treatment is complete, we will inform you about the suggested resting period and all necessary medications. This will help you stay calm after your care. After the appropriate healing period, you will feel better, and can proceed with your daily activities like before.
